Every business owner wants to see their website on the first page of Google, and preferably soon. There is no shortcut or trick that guarantees a ranking. But there are things that make it much easier for Google to understand your website and for visitors to love it, and those are the things that move rankings.
I'm Anson PJ, a digital marketer in Thrissur working on SEO, websites and paid ads. These are the seven areas I focus on first when a website needs to rank.
1. Make your website fast
One of the most important factors for ranking a website on Google is having a fast-loading, well-optimised website. Ideally, your website should load within about two seconds. If it takes too long, visitors lose patience, leave, and move to a competitor's site.
Google measures real-user loading experience through Core Web Vitals. For a "good" score, aim for:
| Metric | What it measures | Good |
|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | How fast the main content loads | 2.5 seconds or less |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | How fast the page responds to taps and clicks | 200 milliseconds or less |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | How much the layout jumps while loading | 0.1 or less |
Quick wins:
- Compress images and use modern formats like WebP; set image width and height.
- Use good hosting and a caching plugin.
- Remove unused plugins, heavy sliders and unnecessary animations.
- Lazy-load images and videos below the fold.
- Test regularly on PageSpeed Insights, especially on mobile.
That's why website speed optimisation should always be a priority. If you're still planning your site, read things to know before creating a WordPress website.
2. Give visitors a great experience
Think about how Instagram works. When people find a video interesting and engage with it, Instagram may show it to more people. A similar principle applies to websites, although Google's ranking systems work differently and Google doesn't publish every signal it uses.
What Google does say is that its systems aim to reward helpful, people-first content and a good page experience. In practice:
- If visitors find your website useful, engaging and easy to use, they stay longer and explore more pages.
- If it's slow, confusing or missing the information they want, they leave and visit another website.
Google continuously crawls and evaluates websites, so rankings can change at any time. It isn't something that happens only once every couple of months. Depending on the website and the change, improvements can sometimes become visible within a few days.
3. Keep navigation within 3–4 clicks
The next important factor is user experience and website navigation. Visitors should be able to find the information they're looking for within three or four clicks from the homepage.
If users have to go through too many pages or unnecessary steps just to find basic information, they get frustrated and leave. Your website should be simple, well-organised and easy to navigate:
- A clear main menu with plain page names like Services, Work, About and Contact.
- Important pages linked from the homepage.
- A visible call or WhatsApp button so visitors never have to search for contact details.
- Breadcrumbs on deeper pages, and no dead-end pages.
4. Write SEO-friendly content and structure
Another essential factor is SEO-friendly content and website structure. Your content should be useful for visitors while also being easy for Google to understand. Google's SEO Starter Guide recommends the same basics:
- Proper headings: one H1 per page, then H2 and H3 in a logical order.
- Relevant keywords: use the words your customers actually search, naturally, in titles, headings and text.
- Clear page structure: one main topic per page with a descriptive URL.
- Internal linking: link related pages together with descriptive anchor text.
- Unique titles and meta descriptions that make people want to click.
- Answer questions directly with short summaries and FAQs. This also helps AI search tools like Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT understand and quote your content.
5. Design mobile-first
Most people search on their phones, and Google primarily uses the mobile version of your site for mobile-first indexing. Make sure the mobile site has the same content as desktop, readable text without zooming, buttons that are easy to tap, and no pop-ups that cover the content.
6. Help Google crawl and index faster
Google can only rank pages it has found and indexed. To speed this up:
- Verify your site in Google Search Console.
- Submit an XML sitemap.
- Use URL Inspection → Request indexing for new or updated important pages.
- Link new pages from existing pages so Google discovers them naturally.
- Check the Pages report regularly and fix "not indexed" errors.
Ultimately, the goal is a website that offers a smooth user experience while making it easier for search engines to crawl, understand and index your pages. Learn how Google Search works.
7. Build local trust and authority
For local businesses, ranking isn't only about the website. Google also looks at how trusted and relevant your business is in your area:
- Create and fully optimise your Google Business Profile: categories, services, photos, hours and regular posts.
- Ask happy customers for Google reviews and reply to every review.
- Keep your business name, address and phone number the same everywhere online.
- Earn links and mentions from relevant local websites, directories and partners.
I help Thrissur businesses with this through SEO and local SEO services.
How fast can you really rank on Google?
"Fast" in SEO is relative. Fixing a technical problem, such as a page that was blocked from Google, can show results within days. Building strong rankings for competitive keywords takes longer. Google itself says that in most cases SEOs need four months to a year to implement improvements and see potential benefit.
Be careful of anyone who guarantees a #1 ranking or overnight results. If you need enquiries while SEO builds up, Google Ads and Meta Ads can bring traffic from day one. See selected outcomes on my client ad results page.

Frequently asked questions
How can I rank on Google fast?
Focus on what you control: make the website load fast, keep navigation simple, write helpful content with clear headings and keywords, make it mobile-friendly, submit a sitemap in Google Search Console, link pages internally, and build local trust with a Google Business Profile and reviews. No one can guarantee a ranking or a timeline.
How long does it take to rank on Google?
It depends on competition, the website's history and the quality of the work. Small changes can show within days, but Google has said that in most cases SEO needs four months to a year to implement improvements and see potential benefit.
Does website speed affect Google ranking?
Yes. Page experience, including Core Web Vitals, is something Google's ranking systems take into account, and slow pages also lose visitors. Aim for a Largest Contentful Paint of 2.5 seconds or less, and ideally a page that feels loaded within about two seconds.
How many clicks should it take to find information on a website?
As a practical rule, visitors should reach any important page within three or four clicks from the homepage. Simple menus, clear page names and internal links make this possible.
Does Google use user engagement for ranking?
Google does not publish every signal it uses, but its systems aim to reward content that is helpful and satisfying for people. A useful, easy-to-use website naturally keeps visitors engaged, which is good for both SEO and conversions.
